A Patch released to use Fring over 3G networks
October 6th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
As you all know by now, Fring has made it’s way onto the AppStore two days ago. The big limitation that most of us found out is that it’s main functions of interest that made it stand out of the crowd, it’s VOIP capabilities, could only be accessed using Wifi. Most operators would very much prefer not giving the opportunity to its users to get a hand on VOIP Apps over their network. Why? They might lose money.

Well sorry for them since there’s now a way to Patch Fring so it can be used over the 3G or EDGE networks that’s been explained in detail on Fring’s message board.
A. You can download the latest patched Fring version 1.0.1.5 here or v1.0 here, (mirror1), (mirror2) . Then just simply install the modified Fring for 3G just as you would with any other App Store application.
B. Patch the original Fring app you’ve already installed on your iPhone by following this guide on how to achieve full 3G freedom :
- You must be running a Jailbroken iPhone / iTouch
- Install original Fring via iTunes App Store.
- Now SSH into your iPhone / iTouch; remember root / alpine
- Find Fring.app under root var/mobile/applications
- To find the Fring.app, you then need to click on the most recently installed folder which will be your original Fring and inside should be the Fring.app
- On your computer, rename the modified 3g Fring .api to .zip; it will now open in winzip or mac compatible unzipper e.g. zipeg
- Delete the original Fring.app on your iPhone / iTouch
- Copy the extracted 3g Fring.app from the zip folder across to your iPhone / iTouch either via the WinSCP (PC) or Yummy FTP (Mac).
- Now you need to set the permissions. This is easy so please do make it more complcated for yourselves. ALL the files within the 3g Fring.app replacement must be set to 755 (Yummy) or 0755 (WinSCP). You should see all the files being altered as it goes through the process of changing the permissions.
- When I tried it, it worked immediately after changing the permissions without a reboot but if it does not work then please reboot.
* This only works with a Jailbroken iPhones

That rapidshare site where the file is located is a scam. They claim I have exceeded my download limits and I have to pay. Does anyone know any alternative locations for this file?

Rapidshare is not a scam site, it’s the most popular one-click hosting sites out there. It does happen though that the limit has been exceeded for non-paying users since this is a hot files that loads of people are downloading. I was however able to get it via the link just now as I tried (I also am a non-paid user on Rapidshare).
Anyhow so this won’t happen again in the future I’ve updated the post with a few mirror sites to download the Fring for 3G patched IPA file.
