The Apple iPhone Coming to Taiwan on December 13

November 30th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

As the world is mad about Apple Inc’s iPhone 3G, the leading handset purchased by adult consumers in the U.S., iPhone 3G will soon be the latest craze for Taiwanese consumers by the end of this year in Taiwan.

Chunghwa Telecom, the largest operator in Taiwan region, has set the date on when the iPhone 3G be available. Starting December 13, the phenomenal phone can be grabbed legally by Taiwanese. Beside iPhone, Chunghwa is in talk with HTC, the maker of the first Google phone, T-Mobile G1, to offer second generation Google phones as well.

The company said it would sell iPhones exclusively for an unspecified period, with a two-year service contract carrying a minimal month fee of NT$1,049 (about US$ 31). To get a free iPhone with 8GB memory space, people will have to sign a two-year contract with a monthly charge of NT$2,549 (about US$ 76). Or they can buy the phone from Chunghwa Telecom for at least NT$26,600 (about US$ 800) and get a prepaid number.

Chunghwa is starting the pre-sales beginning today until December 10. The company is optimistic to reach 50,000 units of iPhone by next March. Most sales is targetted during end year sales (Christmas) and Chinese’s Lunar Year.

  • Temperature and Saturation

Hidden TV out features discovered in iPhone firmware 2.2 SDK

November 27th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

ArsTechnica managed to discover an unpublished programming framework that allows third-party applications to be viewed on external devices such as a tv. This framework is known as MPTVOutWindow, which sends video out through the dock connector to an external screen.

This video out feature is primarily meant to send out movies, however this framework will allow applications to be viewed on something other than the iphone.

iPhone developer Erica Sadun, discovered that the touch input on the iphone is disabled when connected to an external device, which prevents the iphone from acting as a regular controller, but it still recognizes accelerometer input.

Moreover, Erica also discovered that the programming call appears to be designed for landscape mode rather than portrait. Although all these limitations, developers eagerly wrote basic codes and plan to explore the MPTVOutWindow function in the near future.

A video is available to see what this function is able to do:

Handy iPhone Travel Apps

November 26th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Since the release of the App Store, users of the iPhone and iPod touch have seen a virtual flood of new applications that are useful for the traveler. Some of them are aimed at a particular city, while others are useful virtually anywhere. A few applications aren’t aimed at travelers in particular, but can be invaluable when you’re on the road.
We’ve selected eight apps that we’d take with us on our next trip.

Spend is an easy to use budgeting & finance tool that allows you to keep track of how much you’ve spent. Want to know if you can keep traveling or if you have to wire home for moola? It’s easy with Spend. (We use it on our Ipod Touch for keeping track of our regular spending and it’s awesome.)

We all know it’s important to be aware of holidays wherever you’re going, especially if you’re going to be in a foreign culture. Holiday can help you know what important dates are coming up, in over 60 countries worldwide. Don’t be caught unaware!

Drunk at a bar in New York? Lost in London? Calling a cab is just what you need. This app will show you all the cab companies in over 10,000 cities in 10 different countries. This app gets bonus points, as all the data is stored on your phone/ipod, no internet access required.

Oh so much more than just a GPS-based compass app, this little app lets you store up to 30 locations, which allows you to find your way back to use the compass to find your way back “home.” Now, you won’t have to wonder how to get back to your hotel…

There’s nothing crazier than having to use the bathroom in an unfamiliar place and not knowing where to go. SitOrSquat will allow you to find bathrooms close by, all over the world. No more frantic searching…

Take advantage of all the great features of Yelp, in the palm of your hand. Find the best food, coffee, beer, or shopping nearby, at least as long as you’re in the US or Canada.

A great app for finding great places to eat in the US and Canada. If you’re feeling indecisive, you can just shake your phone for ideas.

Discover allows you to manage all sorts of files on your iphone/ipod, which means you can take your pdfs and images of maps, etc with you when you go. No internet access required. Goodbye guidebook!

Honorable Mention:

These two apps are great, but are city-specific. Take them with you if you’re headed to their applicable cities.

If you’re in Washington D.C. and are looking for a place to have a good evening, the Washington Post’s Going Out Guide is a great place to turn. You can find bars, restaurants, and more, plus check out editor’s reviews. The app is well organized, so you can find what you’re looking for pretty quickly. It’s all self contained, so no internet access is required.

Metros Guide is a great little tool for planning your transit trips in major cities in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen & Hong Kong). Plus, it’s got a cute little panda as your guide! (Internet access is required)
