SwitchEasy Colors iPhone 3G Case
January 26th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
How does it fit?
It fits nicely and protects the back. It also comes with two protective film layers – a anti-glare one and a non-anti-glare one. The film is your protection on the front.
How well does it protect the iPhone?
It protects the backside of your iPhone and exposes the bottom, the volume controls area, and the top part. The front is protected by film. So this is definitely not an all protective case if that’s what you’re looking for.
How does it look?

As you can see in the photo, you will notice that it resembles the previous version of Apple’s wireless mouse. For the white version, you could still slightly see the Apple logo and the other text on the back. In the end, not sure if it’s intentional, but you get a slight subtle gray Apple logo. It looks kind of cool.
Impressions
All the cases I’ve tried for iPhone and iPod touches so far have the entire case enclosing everything except the screen. This is the first time I’m using a case that exposes the front side of the iPhone. And I found that I actually prefer that because I realized the case that surrounds the screen usually gets in the way when typing.
Though not as protective, I think with the front surface exposed, it increases the usability. Typing and moving icons around are a lot easier to do.
My only gripe would be that the volume controls are hard to push as they are surrounded by the casing.

Apple says no to the iPhone Nano Rumor
January 22nd, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Finally all the rumors about the iPhone Nano and the Mac Netbook have been put to rest! Tim Cook who is the acting CEO at Apple mentioned this:
“You know us, we’re not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That’s not who we are. That’s not why we’re here. We’ll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone.”

He was also asked about the Mac Netbook. This was his response to that query:
“We’re watching that space, but right now from our point of view, the products in there are principally based on hardware that’s much less powerful than we think customers want, software technology that is not good, cramped keyboards, small displays.”
Kind of a fuzzy reply but pretty much says that it’s not in their roadmap tight now. Alright – 2 rumors busted now!

Clippy App Brings Copy & Paste to iPhone
January 20th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
I was half asleep, but I had to wake up for this one. At long last, a REAL implementation of copy/paste on the iPhone. It works in every text field. It’s stupid that I’m actually saying this, you’d think copy and paste was a brand new invention, but I’m actually dumbfounded, wallowing in my own joy. It’s called “Clippy” (Yes, like the dreaded MS Office character) and it’s brought to us by iSpazio and Ryan Petrich. It’s jailbreak only, as all good things are, but here’s the procedure: Open Cydia, install “Clippy-Beta.” It couldn’t be easier. It’s somewhat buggy – for example, in sms, you can’t actually SEE what you’re copying/pasting, and the button to return to the main view doesn’t work properly (you have to aim for the bottom left, or the button press does’t work). And it gums up your number keypad. But for copy/paste, I’d do all sorts of things far less desirable than those.
Video of Clippy via Youtube:
Bug List:
1. When editing a 1 line text field, the copy/paste bar obscures all the text. Text input is not impossible, but much less convenient. Ideally, when the copy/paste bar is deployed, the bottom of the current UIView should be in line with the top of the bar and not the top of the keyboard.
2. Sometimes, when in a view that has a parent (there’s what looks like a back button at the top left), particularly in SMS when viewing a message, the button to go to the parent view is difficult to click. In SMS, I have to aim for the bottom left corner of this button or I simply can’t press it.
3. When copying text from a multi line text field (for example, the field present when forwarding an email), you cannot select multiple lines.
4. In this same type of field (reproduce by trying to forward an email), you can’t scroll around while selecting text (normally holding the magnifier near the edge scrolls the text field, not true of clippy).
5. In this same type of feild, the scroll bars are totally misplaced while scrolling normally. The horizontal floats midair, and the vertical is a few widths off.
6. Uneditible text fields are totally un-selectable. Not sure how you’d even attack that beast, though.

Ustream: The New iPhone Live Viewing App
January 20th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
News hit the internet about a week ago of live video streaming coming to the iPhone in the form of Ustream’s video service. The “Ustream iPhone Viewing Application” was pending approval from Apple, meaning that when approved, iPhone users would be able to download the application from the App Store.

The app was approved today and has got iPhone users rubbing their hands at the opportunity to watch today’s events via their phones.
The app itself allows you to watch and chat with any Ustream show but does require a WIFI connection, the 3G networks just don’t support the kind of speeds needed to stream this service.
The release comes just at the right time for Ustream as today the world will witness President Obama’s Inauguration, with millions of people logging onto the internet to catch live footage of the ceremony. Allowing iPhone users to tune in to today’s inauguration will show us the real power of today’s technology and will lay the foundation to many other big events.

Next up for Ustream is the development of an application that will allow you to stream live video from your iPhone (owners of jailbroken phones already have the option using Qik). Who knows, you may be able to stream the birth of your baby boy or girl using your iPhone in the near future!

Apple has Already 500 Million Apps Downloaded
January 16th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Just a quick little note here… Apple has announced that they’ve had 500 million apps downloaded via the App Store. That’s a lot of apps. 500 million x an average of $1.99 per app, divide by 3, then carry the 2… Lots of money exchanging hands here (sure, a lot of free apps too… haven’t forgot about that!).

Within the graphic above you’ll also note the tally of apps available is now above 15,000. I can’t recall any estimates on how many apps are available on other platforms… Surely Android is well behind this mark, but as new devices go to market, and more developers take on the platform, I know we’ll see more development within the Android Market. Plus with RIM and Palm set to launch their own app stores, this should provide us with a much easier way of not only downloading apps, but comparing app count, prices and more from platform to platform.
Congrats to Apple, and congrats to all of the developers out there that are pumping out new apps daily. Gotta love checking out the App Store each day to find new and exciting things to try out!

Where Did the Promises About Push Notification for iPhone Go?
January 15th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Apple announced way back in June 2008 that it would be introducing a push notification service for developers. Basically, your iPhone or iPod touch applications could get push updates without being open. Get a facebook message? New IM? All that gets pushed to your phone and it alerts you right away. That service was supposed to be unveiled in September 2008. We’re now still waiting, and it’s January 2009. What happened? Here’s my 2 cents:
Apple hasn’t publicly said what the deal is, though Steve Jobs supposedly emailed a user and said it was delayed to make it “100% right.” What does that mean, exactly?
Think about your iPhone now, and the way it handles (or tries to handle) notifications from applications. Imagine your phone is off or you ignore for a few hours during a normal business day. You look at it, and you get a slew of new messages. Your phone alerts you to Voicemail (rare as they are these days), Missed Calls, Emails, new Calendar entries, SMS, App Store updates, etc. That is a TON of apps to open (Phone, Email, Calendar, SMS, App Store). And, there’s no quick-and-easy way to see everything at once. Imagine you only have a couple emails, maybe one missed call, etc. You’re opening app after app after app just for a quick check. Or, you’re already deep in an app, and your phone dings to tell you that you have a new message. Guess what!?! Gotta quit that app and go open Mail. That’s not only annoying, it’s inefficient. Right now, with just Apple’s apps giving you updates, it’s simply a pain.
Now imagine if you throw 5 other apps in there all updating constantly. There could easily be 15 spots you have to check on your phone just because you didn’t look at it for a few hours. That’s not alright. The only attempt at some unified approach is a screen when you unlock the phone that shows who called/texted/left voicemail. Not good enough…at all. I think Apple knows this, and that’s why we have a delay. More on that in a second.
What have others done about the issue? The G1 has a great solution for notifications, offering a notifications drop-down page where all these are shown on one screen. The newly debuted Palm pre has a handy notifications screen too, addressing these issues. Everythingtreo.com posts a nice video of it here:
So, if Apple were simply making it so that apps could just get push notifications, we’d probably have a solution already. After all, they were well on their way to adding it, only 3 months out. I think Apple has another trick up their sleeve, and that’s to implement a whole notifications system with this updating, doing it, as Steve said, “100% right the first time.”
Is there any evidence of this? Certainly! Apple was granted a patent back in September detailing a system just like this, but in September, people though the push notifications still might come, new notifications system or not. AppleInsider details a recent patent from Apple. Usually Apple’s patents don’t mean an actual product, but this one’s timing, especially given the delay, makes sense. AppleInsider noted:
Such an implementation could become increasingly useful once Apple releases support for global push notifications that will allow third party applications to receive transmissions in the background or when the phone is in a locked state.

I agree, but instead of it being “increasingly useful,” I think it becomes mandatory with push notifications. And I think once push notifications arrive, we’ll see such a system. Apple’s proposed system is seen above from a filing to the US Patent Office covered by AppleInsider.
