Apple orders more iPhone NAND chips
February 27th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Apple feasts on NAND memory modules like no other tech company out there. With over $1.2 billion in NAND flash memory purchases for 2007, Apple has cemented its position as the largest buyer of NAND memory chips on the planet. With that kind of volume, Apple’s variable demand for cheap flash memory (which Apple uses in their iPod and iPhone lineups) drives the global NAND market up and down, seemingly on a whim. The latest swing in global flash memory prices has ThinkEquity Partners blaming Apple for eating up the world’s supply of NAND chips……
The question is, just what is Apple up to?

Apple’s refreshed iPhone 3G
Apple might be ramping up iPhone 3G production in anticipation of launching a refreshed iPhone 3G. We’ve been expecting Apple to refresh its iPhone lineup with a new iPhone 3G variant sporting either a larger, higher resolution display; more on-board storage capacity, perhaps 32GB worth; or even both. Apple would need a lot of NAND memory chips to build out a fleet of 32GB iPhone 3Gs……
Apple’s CDMA iPhone 3G
If Apple is indeed planning to bring their iPhone 3G to Verizon Wireless, they’d need to start slapping together a new batch of iPhone 3Gs with CDMA radios. Regardless of the number of iPhone 3Gs sitting in stock-rooms the world over, Apple will have to crunch out more CDMA variants if it plans to blitz the US market. But, rumors being what they are, leave Apple’s CDMA iPhone 3G intentions in doubt.
Apple’s next-generation iPhone
Not the iPhone 3G, but perhaps an iPhone 4G (or whatever it ends up being called)? Unlikely as it might be, Apple might already be planning a new iPhone form-factor. From the rumored iPhone Nano to the iPhone Tablet to the iPhone HD to the multi-core iPhone, Apple has been rumored to be working on all sorts of super-portable mobile devices packed with NAND flash memory. Is Apple poised to launch a new breed of iPhone or some other portable mobile device? Time will tell…

iDracula Vampire Hunter Game at only 99 Cents
February 26th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
At first glance, iDracula is visually reminiscent of the Old Diablo series. Imagine my surprise when I fired up the game to find it has both feet firmly planted in a genre resurrected by Geometry Wars: the twin-stick shooter. For anyone unfamiliar with this type of game, it utilizes two different directional inputs—the first for traversing the arena and the second for controlling the direction of fire. In this implementation of the genre, you are a vampire hunter fighting wave after wave of monsters, picking up weapons and skills along the way to help you deal with the ever-encroaching onslaught.

Of course, the iPhone does not have the “twin sticks” from which the genre derives it’s name. Instead, like others that have come before, the developer had to devise another control mechanism. iDracula uses two on-screen directional controls giving it razor-accurate response. Per convention, the left side controls your character’s movement while the right side controls firing. The controls are rarely obtrusive and are positioned to still allow for a large play area while still being large enough to facilitate intuitive controls. It’s easy to find where your thumb needs to be to move and/or fire in any given direction.

The game comes with two modes: “Rush” and “Survival.” Rush mode throws you right into the fray. At all times, you’ll be surrounded by tons of monsters, and, armed with your machine gun and unlimited ammo, you’re tasked with mowing down as many as possible. This is the game mode for a quick play session. If you just have a minute or two to play, fire up “Rush” mode to dispense with all the foreplay. Throughout my play in this mode, there isn’t really any progression. That’s where “Survival” mode comes in.
“Survival” mode is the meat of the game. This mode couples the frantic arena shooting with RPG-like progression to give players a surprisingly robust experience. The mechanics are identical, but there is real progression here and incentive to play for more than a few minutes. You start with a handgun, and you’re looking at two or three shots to kill the weakest enemies. Luckily, the enemies will trickle in slowly at first to ease you into the action. Before long, the pace will pick up, new and stronger enemies will be introduced, and you’ll most likely have found a better weapon just about the time you were thinking you weren’t going to hold up much longer with just the pistol. The game seems to be intelligent about when new weapons are dropped so that you never feel like you are either underpowered or overpowered. You also have to manage ammo, but, honestly, once you start getting new weapons, ammo is not tough to find either although you may not necessarily find ammo for the particular weapon you want to use.

The progression comes in other forms as well. Perks are iDracula’s analog to leveling and learning new spells in an RPG. After a number of kills, you will see the perks icon light up in the top-right of the screen. Tap it to access a menu with four randomly selected upgrades like the ability to do more damage when your life gets low or a greater maximum health. These upgrades are persistent throughout your play session. In addition, you will periodically encounter Dracula. He is much tougher than the other enemies. If you defeat him, you are awarded with a shard. Collect shards to advance in rank. Unfortunately, rank is purely superficial; it’s nothing more than a word displayed at the end of the statistics screen displayed when you die leaving little incentive to strive for higher rank.
Now this is sounding like more of a timesink, right? Luckily, the developer considered the habits of mobile gamers and included an autosave that will allow you to resume your game after you have closed the game (or received a call). There is an in-game pause button as well, which is also convenient from time-to-time.
My complaints are few and minor. The character’s lower body moves completely independent of the upper body which creates some wacky-looking scenarios such as running full-speed forward away from monsters while your torso is facing and aiming in the exact opposite direction. The character’s feet should always be within a 90° radius of the direction of his face, but that is not necessarily the case here. I would love to see some sort of narrative and a progression through that narrative although that is a bit much to ask of a game at this price-point. (Maybe in the sequel?)
An audio cue for perks would be nice. I often don’t know until I glance at the top-right of the screen that I have perks available. Finally, it is somewhat difficult to switch weapons in the game. The task itself is simple, but it requires diverting one of your thumbs from a directional control to execute. This is often dangerous by the time you might want to switch weapons because of the frantic pace of the game. To halt either firing or moving at these times is virtually suicide.
I’m really excited to see more from this developer. This is a near-perfect mobile gaming experience for players craving a bit more in the realm of hardcore gaming experiences on the iPhone. It is a genre-bending title that expertly melds a game well-suited to short, quick play sessions with some elements that make it worth coming back to. The game is currently $.99 at the time this review is published and will be for a little while longer. The developer is also promising some meaty additions (like a new game mode) in an upcoming update. The regular price is $2.99. It’s an incredible value at either price, and I’m sure iDracula will remain on my home screen for some time to come.

Yellowsn0w 0.9.8 Unlock Tool Released for iPhone 3G FW 2.2.1
February 6th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Yellowsnow 0.9.8 to unlock iPhone 3G is now available on cydia. It’s not yet announced on iPhone Dev Team blog but twitted by dev team“ yellowsn0w 0.9.8 is on Cydia for those who were seeing wifi or slowness issues with 0.9.7. This is NOT anything related to 02.30.03 baseband “

About Yellow-Snow “ The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive.”
“The 0.9.6 version worked for many but it had a hard-coded address for the airplane mode call. The hard-coded address changes depending on FW version (2.2 vs 2.2.1 so far). The 0.9.7 version tried to make it universal and applicable across all future updates. Although it worked for most people, it did have the side effect of keeping wi-fi off after the toggle. The 0.9.8 version fixes that at the expense of going back to hard-coded addresses. That affects us more than you.”

Youngest Apple Iphone developer: Lim Ding Wen
February 5th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
This is probably the youngest “entrepreneur” I know about. It’s great to see a very young boy havign some success with “something simple” like an iPhone App. A normal 9 year old likes to play with Lego or like to go to a theme park, but that does not go up for Lim Ding Wen, the youngest iPhone App writer. Lim Ding Wen wrote a quite successful iPhone App named Doodle. Doodle is downloaded over 5000 times while I’m writing this post.
Doodle is a very simple drawing application where users can draw with their fingertips. Shaking the iPhone will clear the screen. Check out this video for an instruction (unfortunately without any subtitles):
Lim Ding Wen says that he wrote the app for his younger sisters from 3 and 5 years old. Lim was very early fly-out: he was 2 years old when he started programming stuff. His talent comes from his his dad so Lim Ding said, Lim Thye Chean: a CTO from a tech company in Singapore.
You can download the app here.

iPhone Users Love Games More than Others
February 3rd, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
In a recently released report by ComScore about smartphone users downloading more games, it is observed that out of the 8.4 Million monthly game downloaders from the United States, 14% were the iPhone users. It also finds that on an average 32.4% of the all iPhone users downloaded a game during a month in the quarter ending November 2008. The report has many insights on the activities of the mobile phone users in the US. Worth the notice among them are the 14.2% and 15.8% increase in the “accessing a social networking site” and “accessing a downloaded application” respectively while the “purchasing a ringtone” fell by 1.1%.

This report confirms the observations of many developers of the utility or productivity enhancing applications for the iPhone. We are going to report on detailed app download trends from one of such app developers soon, so stay tuned. But in the meantime, if you are looking for an opportunity to strike it big, your best bet would be a game instead of a utility app. However, we feel that as this “honeymoon” time of game-playing gets over and as per some reports, a more powerful CPU comes to the iPhone 2,1 in future, the utility apps will gain more traction among the mature users.

Adobe and Apple developing Flash for iPhone
February 2nd, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
With Android getting all Flash-ey, Apple’s “Goldilocks” position on Flash — the full Flash player is too hefty, Flash Lite is too weak — seemed pretty untenable. Now Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen has revealed that Apple and Adobe are “collaborating” on making Flash a reality on the iPhone, citing the technical challenge it presents.

What’s clear is that with all this work to do, it doesn’t seem they’re going the watered-down Flash Lite route, but we’re trying not to hold our breath for a full version as there’s no word on when this will hit.
