Dropbox App Now Available for Your iPhone
September 30th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Dropbox allows you to remotely back up important files so that they are not lost in case of a problem with your computer. It continuously runs in the background and whenever you add a file, remove a file or make changes to a file in your “Dropbox” folder, it syncs that file with Dropbox’s remote servers. Synced files can also be accessed from their website, even from a computer that does not have the program installed.

Dropbox now has an iPhone app that allows you to browse the files you have synced from your computer. You can access files that the iPhone supports, such as PDF files, Word documents, images and music files. In addition, images and videos can be uploaded from the iPhone, which will then be automatically synced and uploaded to your desktop computer.
Dropbox comes with 2GB of storage for free, which may be enough to store your most important files, but also has a 50GB package for $9.99 per month and a 100GB package for $19.99 per month.

iPhone Accessories Can Now Prompt for App Download
September 30th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Apple is reportedly allowing ‘Made For iPod’ and ‘Works With iPhone’ certified accessories to prompt the user to install an app when connected. According to iLounge this capability debuted with Griffin Technology’s new iTrip with App Support.

When connecting such an accessory to an iPhone or iPod touch for the first time, an alert box labeled “Application Not Installed” appears, informing users that the accessory requires an application which is not currently installed, and asking if they would like to install the application from the App Store. Upon acceptance, the iPhone or iPod touch then takes users to a new “For This Accessory” page on the App Store, with a direct link to the necessary app’s listing, from which they can download and install the application.

Apple stores to add iPhone activation staff
September 20th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Apple’s iPhone needs to be activated in store. This has never caused efforts for Austrians – but has become a major problem in the USA, where extremely long queues at Apple stores have become the norm rather than the exception.

TheAppleBlog reports the following:
The plans require changes to the store layout to make space for a dedicated space, a la Genius Bar, but titled “iPhone Activation Zone.” This new zone will be manned by a new category of Apple Store staff, named “iPhone Experts,” sporting unique name badges and t-shirts.
MacRumours says that the service requires customers to have already completed the pre-authorization process online, presumably before coming to the store.
Even though the move will likely help raise customer satisfaction, I am not sure whether it really is needed after all, those who queue up have already decided that they want an iPhone…

iPhone 3.1 Problem Feedback
September 10th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
The iPhone 3.1 software update was issued yesterday. Since then, it has caused some handsets to freeze and get stuck in a restore loop. The upgrade wipes out all the content of the device. Moreover, the iPhone gets stuck and cannot be used to make or receive calls. It is also difficult to downgrade the software to the previous 3.0 operating system.

Batwing, an iPhone user, said on Apple’s support forums that he tried everything that he could find on trouble shooting pages, but ended up getting numerical errors after the phone/computer tries to restore to 3.1.
Reinstalling iTunes, restoring on 3 different computers, holding down power/home buttons, nothing helped to restore the phone to 3.1.
According to another user, the iPhone does restore back to 3.0, but trying to update to 3.1 gets the iPhone stuck in recovery mode every time.
Apple should thoroughly test these upgrades before issue them out to users. It seems as though they are not doing thorough testing as so many people are having the same problem with the same software.
Most of the iPhone owners have been using Twitter to discuss the issue and find solutions. It is not known how many iPhone users are affected by the software problems, nor what has caused dozens of devices to crash. Apple has not commented on the situation, although it is likely that engineers are already working on resolving the problem.
