Appsidy: The newest Cydia Store Payment Method
December 22nd, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
As the iPhone becomes more and more popular to the world there is no doubt that jailbreaking the iphone has also gotten very popular. As a matter of fact jailbreaking the iphone has gotten so popular it has been featured on many reputable websites such as cnet.com, tuaw.com, and the list goes on. My point is that jailbreaking the iphone is allowing us the users to be able to do more than we could have imagined whether it be making our iphone a wireless router, to allowing us to make voip calls using skype and 3g unrestrictor.
Now that you know where jailbreaking the iphone is going we can speak of cydia and the business aspect of jailbreaking. For you the user jailbreaking is to get all of the goods but for developers it is like a gold mine with a lot of revenue potential. A year ago you had to purchase an application from cydia by downloading an app and paying the developer however he wanted you to pay whether it was through paypal or some other payment type. Now Saurik the creator of Cydia has created the Cydia Store which allows you to purchase a lot of great jailbroken apps all found in one section which you probably see every time you open the cydia app. The great thing about the cydia store is that you can pay using paypal or amazon payments and they go to saurik so your sure no foul play is involved as he is well known. Another great thing about this is that when you purchase an app you have to authenticate your iphone using your google email account or your facebook id. The authentication feature is great because this ties your purchases to your iphone, so lets say your iphone messes up and you have to restore it and lose your purchased applications. No need to worry because after your back into cydia and have authenticated yourself using your id you can re-download your purchased app for free as you have already paid for it.
Now lets speak of appsidy a new payment method for cydia, it seems fine as competition is always welcome. As of right now things are a little sketchy about this payment method, I have read around forums and done some research and people are having quite a few problems with purchases not going through but getting charged, to paying for an app and not being able to download it. Appsidy doesn’t charge an extra 25 cent paypal fee for using paypal to buy something using their service which is great and i’m sure once Appsidy gets up and running smoothly payments will go through without a problem. It looks like the competition is starting to get tough for cydia now that there are quite a few different stores set up for jailbroken iPhone’s such as rockapp and this new appsidy. Don’t get too excited though because with this new payment method comes a flaw. Take a look at their license transfer policy and NO REFUND policy and this might turn you away

Multitask on your jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch in Palm Pre style
December 21st, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
We all knew this was gonna happen. The day Ryan Petrich announced he was working on a new application to manage backgrounded apps on the iPhone, everyone thought of Multifl0w, and how ProSwitcher (this is the name of the new app by Petrich) could become the new, best multitasking application from Cydia. And here we are today, with ProSwitcher in public beta and a multifl0w update on its way. I’ve been trying ProSwitcher for a few hours now, and I’ve already ditched Multifl0w for it.

ProSwitcher is smooth. It works like Multifl0w, basically, but it’s in details where it stands out. First, animations: when you activate ProSwitcher so that it brings the backgrounded apps on front, the windows fades in and out as if it’s powered by Mac OS’ CoreAnimation or CoreGraphic. It’s sexy. Same applies when you choose the application or quit ProSwitcher: everything feels so natural and integrated into iPhone OS you’ll ask yourself if it’s a native appllication. And I repeat, it’s the first beta, many updates and fixes will come.
Moving on, ProSwitcher comes with a large set of Preferences: you can choose to display the application’s title right under the preview window, dim the background, swipe to close, set a corner radius and many other things. Also, you can choose between 10+ activation methods, including taps / swipes on the statusbar and pinch on the Spingboard.
ProSwitcher is way better than Multifl0w right now, there’s no doubt about it. You can download the beta by adding this source in Cydia: http://booleanmagic.com/repo

Mozilla plans to compete the app stores?
December 19th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Right now mobile apps are hard to develop if what one wants is access to the widest range of browser-equipped smartphones and application stores. Basically, each application has to be re-coded for each mobile operating system.

Mozilla.org thinks it has a better solution: write apps directly for the Firefox mobile browser, using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, and be done with it.
Firefox Mobile (known informally as “Fennec”) will launch for Nokia’s N900 handset “soon,” with versions for Windows Mobile and Android planned for 2010. In developing its new mobile browser, Mozilla.org is trying to replicate and preserve as much of the current user experience as possible, a sore point with some users.
Firefox for mmobile phones will include “The Awesome Bar” that searches a user’s history, bookmarks and tags, allowing users to go to their favorite sites instantly by auto-completing entries.
Firefox preferences, history, and bookmarks can be shared between a desktop and mobile, providing a convenient way to sync important elements of the Web experience. The mobile browser will be continually synchronised with the PC.
If a user starts typing a specific address, and the user has visited that site before, the site will pop up, Mozilla.org says.
Tabs will allow users to browse multiple sites at once and one-touch bookmarking will allow users to quickly organize and add new sites. If a user is working on a PC with multiple tabs open, and then wants to resume on a mobile, the tabs will be available on Firefox Mobile when the user opens it up.
Also, users will be able to “add on” new widgets for the browser itself, something difficult-to-impossible to do at the moment.
For developers, the ability to create apps directly for the Firefox browser will simplify the development process, if not the business model. Developers who simply want people to use an applicatons will find the browser model quite attractive.
Developers who want to create a “for fee” business model might have to stick with the application stores, though, as the billing process will be an issue.
Writing for Firefox should make easier the task of integrating geolocation, camera and calling features of the phone.
Firefox Mobile will offer the fastest Javascript engine of any mobile browser, Mozilla.org says.
“Anyone who knows JavaScript and HTML can develop a great app without having to learn a specific mobile platform,” says Jay Sullivan, Mozilla.org VP.

Is the iPhone going to War?
December 17th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
The iPhone has now become so ubiquitous that no one’s surprised to see it pop up in even the most unlikely areas of life these days. In fact, according to a story in today’s New York Times Technology section, the iPhone may even prove to be a very useful battlefield aid. The Times reports that on Wednesday at the 2009 Intelligence Warfighting Summit in Tucson, an App was announced by military contractor Raytheon that tracks the movement of allied and enemy combatants on the battlefield, using real-time maps to highlight their locations, as well as facilitating secure communications.

J Smart, chief technology officer for Raytheon’s Intelligence and Information Systems, told the Times that Raytheon’s One Force Tracker App will even work on standard iPhones and can also be used by other organizations that might need to keep track of people, such as policemen, firemen and ambulances.
Of course, anyone with even just a basic sat nav will be familiar with points of interest appearing on a map, but the One Force Tracker would contain relevant military information such as sniper nests rather than where to find the nearest gas station or supermarket. According to Smart, information could be sent back and forth via the phone, so soldiers could be warned on the spot about nearby hazards as they approached them, and any information they gathered when in the field could be sent back to a central communications point. Smart added that any military iPhones using the App would probably need to be customized to make them suitable for use in battle, with a longer battery life being one necessity, as well as finding a work-around for the fact that the iPhone can only carry out one function at a time.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 Coming Soon
December 14th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
While iPhone 3.1.3 will only be a minor release, the 4.0 version certainly denotes a major release version and we can expect it to ship with the next-generation iPhone model sometime in summer 2010. Nothing much is known about about the features that the new firmware is going to offer, but we can expect it to add alot of new features, similar to what was experienced when firmware 3.0 was released.

While it is debatable on whether these logs posted by BGR are legitimate or not, one thing which we can be sure of is that Apple is working on something new. After all, the competition in 2010 is going to be tougher than ever before with the new Droid and the Google branded Nexus One phone, both slated for 2010 release.

Live Video Streaming Comes to iPhone With Ustream App
December 9th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Previously, Ustream was approved for the iPhone 3GS, but you couldn’t live stream. Which to be honest, is really the best part about Ustream. But Apple and AT&T have agreed on something and finally allowed you to stream live. We imagine this has to do with another app that was approved last week that allows streaming, but you didn’t hear that from us.

The Ustream Live Broadcaster iPhone App lets we share available videos to Ustream, as well as alternative websites similar to Twitter, Facebook as well as YouTube, as well as it will automatically tide as well as jot down to your Ustream. The new app allows streaming over 3G and wifi.
