Usually every time I would scroll to 7 or the 8 page of my springboard looking for Apps would again have to scroll back those many times to get back page #1. Well no more…
With 2.2 update I can just hit home button and get back to the first page. This is simple and cool. Thanks Apple for this shortcut ![]()

A Patch released to use Fring over 3G networks
October 6th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
As you all know by now, Fring has made it’s way onto the AppStore two days ago. The big limitation that most of us found out is that it’s main functions of interest that made it stand out of the crowd, it’s VOIP capabilities, could only be accessed using Wifi. Most operators would very much prefer not giving the opportunity to its users to get a hand on VOIP Apps over their network. Why? They might lose money.

Well sorry for them since there’s now a way to Patch Fring so it can be used over the 3G or EDGE networks that’s been explained in detail on Fring’s message board.
A. You can download the latest patched Fring version 1.0.1.5 here or v1.0 here, (mirror1), (mirror2) . Then just simply install the modified Fring for 3G just as you would with any other App Store application.
B. Patch the original Fring app you’ve already installed on your iPhone by following this guide on how to achieve full 3G freedom :
- You must be running a Jailbroken iPhone / iTouch
- Install original Fring via iTunes App Store.
- Now SSH into your iPhone / iTouch; remember root / alpine
- Find Fring.app under root var/mobile/applications
- To find the Fring.app, you then need to click on the most recently installed folder which will be your original Fring and inside should be the Fring.app
- On your computer, rename the modified 3g Fring .api to .zip; it will now open in winzip or mac compatible unzipper e.g. zipeg
- Delete the original Fring.app on your iPhone / iTouch
- Copy the extracted 3g Fring.app from the zip folder across to your iPhone / iTouch either via the WinSCP (PC) or Yummy FTP (Mac).
- Now you need to set the permissions. This is easy so please do make it more complcated for yourselves. ALL the files within the 3g Fring.app replacement must be set to 755 (Yummy) or 0755 (WinSCP). You should see all the files being altered as it goes through the process of changing the permissions.
- When I tried it, it worked immediately after changing the permissions without a reboot but if it does not work then please reboot.
* This only works with a Jailbroken iPhones

Jump back one song via headphones with three clicks on iPhone 2.1
September 16th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
This cool tip from macosxhints helps me jump back a song while I am playing my iPhone’s iPod. This will work with 2.1 firmware and above. I have to just triple click my “click-controller” that is present in the headphone (earphone accessory) for iPhone. The one which we use to pause/play and move to next song, remember? This very click-control will help you jump back a song as well.

I just tried this and yes, this works. Rocking tip. Here is how macosxhints does it:
iPhone 2.1 adds one more feature to the clicker: triple-click to jump back one song. So one click will pause the current song, two clicks will jump forward one track, and three (very quick) clicks will jump backward one song.

Ten handy iTunes tips you just got to know
September 11th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
iTunes as an application has long gone beyond what its name dictates. Apart from your ‘tunes’, it now manages Movies, TV shows, Applications, Podcasts, Ringtones, iPhones, Games, and is the gateway for your iDevices to access even non-media content like Contacts and Calendars.

Without getting carried away with my ranting, here are a bunch of random tips that should help you navigate better through this ever-growing application. None of these involve any hackery and work with the default settings in iTunes.
- Quickly jump to your any artist by rapidly typing the name. Even the first few characters will do. One doesn’t have to have anything selected for this to work. And this will come in handy if you use CoverFlow in fullscreen mode (yeah, like anyone does).
- Command+F, as we know it, symbolises search. However, in iTunes it is used to go into full screen mode. Moreover, there is no “Search” in the menu bar so that one could change the shortcut. So one has to stick to the default one, Command+Option+F, which isn’t half bad.
- Another shortcut that I like is the 5 second forward/backward skip for the currently playing track. Works with any playlist or track selected. Command+Option+left/right arrow keys. Of course, to skip to the next song/previous song, that would be Command+arrow keys. I have a feeling Steve Jobs knew this one.
- iTunes lacks a “Now Playing” playlist. Which means that, for one, you cannot queue up tracks after you have started playing a song. Two, one cannot make iTunes automatically stop playback after playing a single song in the library. The first one I still don’t know what to do with, but for the second one, just type in any random characters in the search field to make the library blank. This will cause iTunes to stop playing after the currently playing track is over.
- As inconsistent as the Zoom button is in the rest of the OS, here we have a totally different behaviour. iTunes goes into mini mode on clicking the green Zoom button. To make it conform to normal OS X zoom behaviour, one has to Option+Click the zoom button.
- Cover Flow is a great addition to iTunes and I usually have it turned on all the time. However, if one has a lot of applications and documents open, resizing the iTunes window with Coverflow on can be a big pain as it continuously redraws the artwork. In situations like this, Command+drag the window corner which will just drag out the outline. On release, iTunes will resize itself to the new dimensions without putting much strain on resources.
- By default, iTunes grabs any thumbnail from within the first few seconds of a video. Now you might want to grab the movie cover from somewhere like impawards.com, but if you are too lazy to do that, then just Ctrl+click the movie while it is playing/paused, and select “Set Poster Frame”. Next time you see it in Front Row or iTunes or your iPhone, the poster frame will be something more meaningful (as opposed to the black screen or studio name that iTunes automatically generates).
- With Cover Flow, artwork has become an all important part of managing music. However, going through every album with missing artwork one at a time can be time consuming and ratty. To get iTunes to search for artwork for all those albums with missing artwork at once, just make sure you having nothing selected (just reopen iTunes) in your library, and select “Get Album Artwork” from the Advanced menu in the menu bar.
- Audiobooks are great. If you haven’t tried them yet, don’t wait any longer, especially if you have an iPod/iPhone. However, dragging MP3s or AACs into iTunes, specially if each of those files is a separate chapter is not going to cut it. It will clutter your library and not resume from where you left off. To get the audiobooks into the special Audiobooks section in your library, convert the files to AAC, if they aren’t already, and then rename the files to the .m4b extension. When you import those files into iTunes, they will automatically go into the Audiobooks section. Alternatively, one could use Audialhub to automatically convert and send to files to iTunes as audiobooks.
- I don’t really have a 10th tip, and 9 didn’t sound like a wholesome figure, so for the last one I will suggest you look at our iTunes Extenders post to get a better iTunes experience. Also look at the MetaX review, which lets you quickly tag your movies and TV shows.
If you have any questions regarding iTunes, or any special tips to share, please leave them in the comments.

Tips on how to solve the problem of an iPhone not showing up in iTunes
September 11th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
I upgraded my Mac over the weekend and finally installed Leopard. The whole process was simple and went off without a hitch — I thought.

This morning I downloaded a few new programs from the App Store, plugged in my iPhone to sync. And… nothing! A little beep let me know the phone was plugged in and the battery was charging, but as far as iTunes was concerned, no phone.
A quick trip to the Internet showed that this is a relatively common problem for folks that upgrade. Here’s the link to the Apple discussion forum that solved my iPhone issue. The solution is to reinstall iTunes — even if you’re already using the current iTunes version.
So, now my iPhone is happily syncing again and I’m completely up-to-date with software. The bright side is now I get to test out the new features of iTunes 8 such as Genius and the new Visualizer.

Long Sync Times for iPhone? Here’s a fix for you!
September 3rd, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Are you one of the many iPod Touch or iPhone users who suffers from Synchronizations that take hours instead of minutes?
Here is a brief walk through on how to fix this issue:
Step One: Plug your iPod Touch or iPhone into your computer.
Step Two: When your iPod Touch or iPhone is recognized by iTunes, go to your preferences screen and select “Manually Sync” (changing it from automatic sync).
Step Three: In the left hand pane in iTunes, right click on your iPod Touch or iPhone and down at the bottom click on “Reset Warnings”.
Step Four: Sync your iPod Touch or iPhone, and if you receive a message about sending logs to Apple to
help troubleshoot problems, select NO. Apple’s code for sending in these logs are causing the extremely slow synchronizations. I’m sure Apple will eventually get around to fixing this issue, but for now you can perform these steps to reduce your synchronization times back down to normal.
