August 5th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone

With over 13,000 games available for the iPhone developers are rushing to have their franchises on the device. According to Namco, Tekken and Soul Calibur could follow suit. Namco’s so keen to benefit from the gaming gold mine that is the iPhone and iPod Touch that the company earlier revealed its Apple gaming division titled Apple Games. Speaking to Kotaku he admitted that “There is a gold rush to do Apps for the App store,” he said. “And Namco is at the forefront of that movement.”

As part of that Namco strategy he hinted that fighting titles Tekken and Soul Calibur could soon be appearing on the App Store, despite the complexities posed with using a touchscreen to control a complicated fighter.

Asked about putting such games onto a device with no controllers Kromey said “I would love that, I think twitch games would be great, it’s just the controls that are a challenge. We are thinking about that.”

The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition for iPhone

July 24th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone

In the wake of 1990’s The Secret of Monkey Island (TSOMI), adventure games became a dime a dozen in a market that craved another point and click quest to emulate LucasArts‘ masterpiece. The original game spawned four sequels – the most sincere proof of its market influence – and in 2009, has undergone a facelift, a re-imagining, and now, has been stuffed into the iDevice, waiting to be dug up iPhone gamers. But, fans of the genre or not, Monkey Island is a catch-all game. Funny, sarcastic and colourful, it is a riot which is sure to make become a hit with any gamer. A cursory glance at App Store reviews will prove how realistic that claim is; LucasArts’ genre-defining game is sitting at a cumulative 4,5 stars, or if you can’t suss out stars anymore, a strong Grab!

Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition for iPhone Screenshots:

The re-mastering that the iPhone TSOMI has undergone is slightly different from console and PC versions. It doesn’t retain the original 1990 version, but otherwise, it is the same game, replete with voice-overs, new animations and graphics, the game has been re-awakened to a nearly perfect iPhone incarnation.

After the PC’s mouse and keyboard, the iPhone’s touchscreen interface could have vaunted the best interface among all consoles, but LucasArts outwitted themselves, making TSOMI a virtual copy of the console version’s control system – the cursor has to be dragged around the screen as if the iPhone was slaved to a controller. With this small annoyance aside, the game is an excellent rendition of the classic.

Armado: A 3D Platform Game Comes to the iPhone

November 15th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

A new games was just released by the creators of the popular Spore Origin.

Armado is a 3D platform action game that features good graphics but lacks some diversity in its level design. It remind me of Crash Bandicoot for those who are old enough to have played this 1996 PlayStation title. The gameplay is limited to going forwards and backwards while you control your character with the accelerometer. You can also jump by tapping the screen to grab things or avoid obstacles.

Here is a video to give you a better idea of what Armado is all about:

Armado is available ON the App Store now for $4.99.

Guitar Rock Tour for iPhone

November 10th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Gameloft released another game on the App Store : Guitar Rock Tour. Very similar to the Guitar Hero franchise as far as gameplay & aesthetic, the game manages to be different enough to have the transition onto the iPhone work and be still lots of fun to play.

For those who wonder about how the gameplay transcends here’s a video of Guitar Rock Tour in action:

The game for now only features two instruments and 17 songs. Which makes it a bit of limited value for the $10 it’s sold at. Hopefully a multiplayer mode and downloadable content will be added in future updates.
