Deep Green Chess Game for iPhone

December 30th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Everyone is going to tell you how great Deep Green’s interface is, but the real beauty to me is that I can actually play chess at a reasonable level with it. The chess engine (it is based on “Tiny”) is strong, and it responds quickly. You can take back moves (all the way back to the beginning), get suggestions from the computer, and move pieces either by dragging or tapping without changing settings.

Deep Green is a fast and strong Chess Game for iPhone.
Flaws? It doesn’t bring up a “check” or “checkmate” indicator. It does, however, vibrate, which was more than enough for me. You can’t play another human over a wireless network; you could hand the phone back and forth. That’s it for flaws.
If you’re interested in trivia, Deep Green was originally available for the Newton, which Apple stopped producing shortly thereafter. It takes up less than 2MB on your phone.
Back in the day I paid almost $100 for my Radio Shack board, and upwards of $30 for Chessmaster. Deep Green costs $4.99 during the introductory period ($7.99 thereafter), and it is fantastic. Go buy.

X-Plane 9 flight simulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch

September 15th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

A week ago I complained about the lack of new Apps, but surprise, some great Apps came. Let’s take a look at one X-Plane 9 by Laminar Research.

First my ratings (based on Game Version 9.0):
Game Type: Flight Simulation
Graphics: 5/5
Sound: 4/5 (only sound effects)
Can listen to your own music: Yes
Gameplay: 4.5/5
Learning curve: Steep, learn to fly is easy, landing is the touch part…

I didn’t think possible for the iPhone/iPod Touch, a Flight Simulator! X-Plane 9 is “just” that, and no more. So if you want to shoot something you shouldn’t buy this and invest your US$ 9.99 into something else.If you like Fligh Simulator or X-Plane on your Mac or PC you should get this now!

This is great game but there are some limitations:

  • No other air traffic
  • No cities (at least I haven’t found any)
  • No radio communications etc.
  • Only 1 runway

When you start the game the first time you find yourself sitting on the runway, some instructions would have been nice. So here a quick guide how to get you up in the air:

  • Tap on Brake to loosen your brake
  • Slide the throttle on the left side to the top.
  • Try to keep the plane on the middle of the runway. you can steer the plane to the left and right by turning the iPhone/iPod Touch like a steering wheel.
  • Once you reach about 130 knots tilt the iPhone/iPod Touch so that the top side moves towards you. Don’t tilt the iPhone/iPod Touch too much
  • Tap on Gear to retract your gear.

You can access a menu and different views by tapping once on the middle of the screen.

Flying around is fun and it feels realistic and the controls work good and work as you would expect it. You can choose between 4 different air planes and also select weather, wind, time of the day, visibility.

Anrufen Online gaming coming to the iPhone

September 10th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

iPhone as a gaming platform is still young, but that’s not stopping some developers from dreaming big.

WiSTONE is currently developing Anrufen Online, a MMORPG, for the iPhone. Now this isn’t the first time a mobile developer has aspired to producing a mobile MMORPG, Kiki Technology made a similar announcement for their upcoming title, PanfobiA. Although many developers promise to deliver, most ambitious titles end up as vaporware.

WiSTONE’s Anrufen Online reminds me much of Diablo, with it’s isometric view, even one of the characters is named after blizzard in the above screenshot, hehe. The game centers around using summons for combat, very few details were given out about this game. If the game plays anything like Diablo’s point and click gameplay, then Anrufen Online will be right at home on the iPhone’s large touchscreen.

It’s also expected to be released on the Symbian OS. Hopefully they’ll allow both Symbian and iPhone owners to play together online.

No word as of when the iPhone version of Anrufen Online will be released.

Illusion Labs, makers of the well-reviewed iPhone game Labyrinth, shot us an email tonight announcing their latest game, and wow does it look amazing.

TouchGrind is a skateboarding game like you’ve never seen. The video below is pretty self-explanatory, and really shows how you will use more than one touch at a time to control the skateboard.

In addition, the game will come with an online level editor that will be open to all, so that new courses can be created and shared.

See the video below, and prepare for a review real soon:

Fantasy Football on Your iPhone

September 5th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

ESPN, welcome to the mobile era

Have you been bummed that ESPN has a contract only with Verizon ?

I logged into my fantasy football teams today to find a link to get updates on my mobile device (inn my case an iPhone). I have guarded excitement since I complained that there was no such thing (at least that was easily findable) for fantasy baseball.

To get started, they asked me for my phone number and wireless carrier. I put that in and got a text message with a link (http://espn.mobi) that took me to http://m.espn.go.com/. I eventually found my way to the fantasy football section and all I needed to do was login. I’m assuming that they just wanted my phone number so they can spam with text messages as the season wears on. Yey! I imagine that you can just go directly to the fantasy football section, and login and you’ll be all set.

Everything is totally hunky dory. As it stands right now, it only allows you to see results. I haven’t found the ability to change your roster, or make any other sort of roster moves. That would be nice. It’s decent as is, but I’d love to be able to manage my team totally from my phone. So, it’s better than nothing and hopefully we’ll keep seeing improvements.

Moto Chaser game for iPhone

September 3rd, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Moto Chaser is a fast-paced, arcade style, racing game for the iPhone and iPod touch. New update, version 1.1, comes with a pause functionality, several new music tracks, improved default difficulty setting, ability to save unlocked levels immediately, general performance tweaks and - if you haven’t already noticed - a new name. Previously, the game was known as Moto Racer.

Grab your iPhone or iPod touch and hit the road with this game! Freeverse, the developer of this app, has recently lowered the price of Wingnuts Moto Racer from $9.99 down to $5.99.

This game provides a unique racing experience in the palm of your hand. Utilizing iPhone’s built-in accelerometer, Moto Chaser features motion sensitive control, which allows you to steer your vehicle by physically tilting the device either to the left or to the right, giving you the extra precision that you need to make it to the checkered flag in one piece.

In Wingnuts Moto Chaser, you will race your way through a series of checkpoints while weaving through traffic, fending off dangerous biker gangs, and hitting some challenging jumps along the way. The game features beautiful scenic courses from locations around the globe. For beginners, this game might be difficult to control, because players have to navigate through narrow and steep courses. Controls tend to be too sensitive and the turbo-boost gives a great load of extra speed, but if you use it - you will likely lose control and die. Overall, this is a very good game and we’re sure you will enjoy it.

Galcon game for the iPhone review

August 31st, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Galcon is an RTS game for the iPhone/iPod that strips out all the micromanagement, tech trees, and resource gathering leaving you with a simple but engrossing game that’s a really good fit for the platform.

Each game begins with a random layout of 20 - 30 unaligned planets spread around the screen. Every planet has a number representing the quantity of spaceships defending it. In the majority of modes you and you opponent/s start with a single planet each and a large army of ships docked on this planet. Your job is to move your ships from planet to planet, expanding your empire by invading unaligned planets to build up strength before finally crushing the opponent’s planets to claim victory.

As time passes the number of ships on each aligned planet will grow - this is dependant on the size of the planet. Larger planets produce ships faster, so invading poorly defended bigger planets is an early priority. After the initial rapid expansion of both sides it’s all about finding a balance between defending your important large planets whilst eating into your opponent’s empire. This is the real core of the game, it’s really enjoyable trying to expand, defend and build up an attacking force under the threat of attack. Keeping an eye on things is made simple by the games single non-scrolling play field, even when things get busy with multiple enemies out to get you. Playing one opponent is fun, but with more opponents the game excels. The game has support for matches against 2 CPU players which was my favourite way to play until this weeks update.

The update has added local and internet play to the game, and instantly improved my already favourable opinion of the game. Other human’s unexpected tactics really spice things up. Do you go all out to squash your neighbour early on or try to stay out of the conflict to build a force to mop up the survivors of your rivals battles? The online games I’ve played (through wi-fi) have performed well and been over extremely quickly you can probably play a match a minute, stats are even tracked online with leaderboards on the games homepage, all more than I was expecting from the first wave of iTunes apps.

Units are moved from planet to planet by dragging your finger from one planet to another; it’s intuitive and works well. Multiple planets can be selected at once letting you unleash mighty armadas of green triangle space ships across the galaxy with ease.

Games generally take a couple of minutes though later more challenging AI levels can take longer to resolve, more often than not with the “You lose” screen. The speed of battles added to the simplicity of the game rules, lack of scrolling and the effectiveness of the controls make it ideal for on the go play.

Galcon is a lovely game to have in your pocket for the times you’re waiting for a bus, or on the train. It’s simple, addictive and the addition of multiplayer has elevated it to something I’ll play a bit of at home as well, as well as making the $9.99 price tag a little more palatable.

Sextuple Word Challenge iPhone Game Review

August 25th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone

Did you ever imagined 6 alphabets out of the 26 letters in English can give you so much fun? The App Store as a fun box has an application which gives you fun and at the same time forces you to recall all the forgotten vocabulary.

Sextuple Word Challenge is a word game deployed by nBit Inc and is somewhat hard to put down game. All you have to do is assemble the letters to form words ranging from 3 letters to 6 letters and populate half of the space given on the top screen to get to the next level within the given time. Select the letters according to the sequence in the word and tap Enter. The score is based on the number of letters.

The graphic is cool and and the interface is well planned. The time countdown and the scoreboard display makes the game exciting. The game is addictive and it just gives perfect opportunity to recollect those simple words such as, hoe, toe, sue, err, mere, bee, etc perfect to rake your brain and while away time.
