Outer Empires MMO Coming to iPhone
July 21st, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Countless new MMOs have seen the light of day in the App Store and show no sign of stopping. While I welcome the concept of MMO games (”Massively Multiplayer Online”) to the iPhone, almost all of them are exactly the same — the only difference is the background story and terminology.

Outer Empires promises to give a truly different MMO experience. According to their website:
Outer Empires is a space based massively multi-player online game created for both the iPhone/iPod Touch and desktop browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari).
Every player will be able to create an online persona in a persistent galaxy; from that point on they can choose from a number of different careers to progress through the game. The game is set up in a sandbox style, to allow players to choose how their character develops.

Players will have a variety of options, including:
- Fly missions (transport, fighter, freight, exploration, bounty)
- Set up colonies (Mining, Food Production, Manufacture, Development/Research)
- Run/join factions (guilds) within the game.
- Take control of and fight for systems (either themselves or as part of a faction).
- Buy/Mod/Build/Sell ships using a number of variable items that can be created from the manufacture plants players set up.
- Trade with other players and the system.
Developed by Ironwill Studios, Outer Empires has a lot of potential. By being able to shape the life and career of your particular character, it already adds extra elements to the game compared to other MMOs.

iDracula Vampire Hunter Game at only 99 Cents
February 26th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
At first glance, iDracula is visually reminiscent of the Old Diablo series. Imagine my surprise when I fired up the game to find it has both feet firmly planted in a genre resurrected by Geometry Wars: the twin-stick shooter. For anyone unfamiliar with this type of game, it utilizes two different directional inputs—the first for traversing the arena and the second for controlling the direction of fire. In this implementation of the genre, you are a vampire hunter fighting wave after wave of monsters, picking up weapons and skills along the way to help you deal with the ever-encroaching onslaught.

Of course, the iPhone does not have the “twin sticks” from which the genre derives it’s name. Instead, like others that have come before, the developer had to devise another control mechanism. iDracula uses two on-screen directional controls giving it razor-accurate response. Per convention, the left side controls your character’s movement while the right side controls firing. The controls are rarely obtrusive and are positioned to still allow for a large play area while still being large enough to facilitate intuitive controls. It’s easy to find where your thumb needs to be to move and/or fire in any given direction.

The game comes with two modes: “Rush” and “Survival.” Rush mode throws you right into the fray. At all times, you’ll be surrounded by tons of monsters, and, armed with your machine gun and unlimited ammo, you’re tasked with mowing down as many as possible. This is the game mode for a quick play session. If you just have a minute or two to play, fire up “Rush” mode to dispense with all the foreplay. Throughout my play in this mode, there isn’t really any progression. That’s where “Survival” mode comes in.
“Survival” mode is the meat of the game. This mode couples the frantic arena shooting with RPG-like progression to give players a surprisingly robust experience. The mechanics are identical, but there is real progression here and incentive to play for more than a few minutes. You start with a handgun, and you’re looking at two or three shots to kill the weakest enemies. Luckily, the enemies will trickle in slowly at first to ease you into the action. Before long, the pace will pick up, new and stronger enemies will be introduced, and you’ll most likely have found a better weapon just about the time you were thinking you weren’t going to hold up much longer with just the pistol. The game seems to be intelligent about when new weapons are dropped so that you never feel like you are either underpowered or overpowered. You also have to manage ammo, but, honestly, once you start getting new weapons, ammo is not tough to find either although you may not necessarily find ammo for the particular weapon you want to use.

The progression comes in other forms as well. Perks are iDracula’s analog to leveling and learning new spells in an RPG. After a number of kills, you will see the perks icon light up in the top-right of the screen. Tap it to access a menu with four randomly selected upgrades like the ability to do more damage when your life gets low or a greater maximum health. These upgrades are persistent throughout your play session. In addition, you will periodically encounter Dracula. He is much tougher than the other enemies. If you defeat him, you are awarded with a shard. Collect shards to advance in rank. Unfortunately, rank is purely superficial; it’s nothing more than a word displayed at the end of the statistics screen displayed when you die leaving little incentive to strive for higher rank.
Now this is sounding like more of a timesink, right? Luckily, the developer considered the habits of mobile gamers and included an autosave that will allow you to resume your game after you have closed the game (or received a call). There is an in-game pause button as well, which is also convenient from time-to-time.
My complaints are few and minor. The character’s lower body moves completely independent of the upper body which creates some wacky-looking scenarios such as running full-speed forward away from monsters while your torso is facing and aiming in the exact opposite direction. The character’s feet should always be within a 90° radius of the direction of his face, but that is not necessarily the case here. I would love to see some sort of narrative and a progression through that narrative although that is a bit much to ask of a game at this price-point. (Maybe in the sequel?)
An audio cue for perks would be nice. I often don’t know until I glance at the top-right of the screen that I have perks available. Finally, it is somewhat difficult to switch weapons in the game. The task itself is simple, but it requires diverting one of your thumbs from a directional control to execute. This is often dangerous by the time you might want to switch weapons because of the frantic pace of the game. To halt either firing or moving at these times is virtually suicide.
I’m really excited to see more from this developer. This is a near-perfect mobile gaming experience for players craving a bit more in the realm of hardcore gaming experiences on the iPhone. It is a genre-bending title that expertly melds a game well-suited to short, quick play sessions with some elements that make it worth coming back to. The game is currently $.99 at the time this review is published and will be for a little while longer. The developer is also promising some meaty additions (like a new game mode) in an upcoming update. The regular price is $2.99. It’s an incredible value at either price, and I’m sure iDracula will remain on my home screen for some time to come.

iPhone Users Love Games More than Others
February 3rd, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
In a recently released report by ComScore about smartphone users downloading more games, it is observed that out of the 8.4 Million monthly game downloaders from the United States, 14% were the iPhone users. It also finds that on an average 32.4% of the all iPhone users downloaded a game during a month in the quarter ending November 2008. The report has many insights on the activities of the mobile phone users in the US. Worth the notice among them are the 14.2% and 15.8% increase in the “accessing a social networking site” and “accessing a downloaded application” respectively while the “purchasing a ringtone” fell by 1.1%.

This report confirms the observations of many developers of the utility or productivity enhancing applications for the iPhone. We are going to report on detailed app download trends from one of such app developers soon, so stay tuned. But in the meantime, if you are looking for an opportunity to strike it big, your best bet would be a game instead of a utility app. However, we feel that as this “honeymoon” time of game-playing gets over and as per some reports, a more powerful CPU comes to the iPhone 2,1 in future, the utility apps will gain more traction among the mature users.

Deep Green Chess Game for iPhone
December 30th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
Everyone is going to tell you how great Deep Green’s interface is, but the real beauty to me is that I can actually play chess at a reasonable level with it. The chess engine (it is based on “Tiny”) is strong, and it responds quickly. You can take back moves (all the way back to the beginning), get suggestions from the computer, and move pieces either by dragging or tapping without changing settings.

Deep Green is a fast and strong Chess Game for iPhone.
Flaws? It doesn’t bring up a “check” or “checkmate” indicator. It does, however, vibrate, which was more than enough for me. You can’t play another human over a wireless network; you could hand the phone back and forth. That’s it for flaws.
If you’re interested in trivia, Deep Green was originally available for the Newton, which Apple stopped producing shortly thereafter. It takes up less than 2MB on your phone.
Back in the day I paid almost $100 for my Radio Shack board, and upwards of $30 for Chessmaster. Deep Green costs $4.99 during the introductory period ($7.99 thereafter), and it is fantastic. Go buy.

X-Plane 9 flight simulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch
September 15th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
A week ago I complained about the lack of new Apps, but surprise, some great Apps came. Let’s take a look at one X-Plane 9 by Laminar Research.

First my ratings (based on Game Version 9.0):
Game Type: Flight Simulation
Graphics: 5/5
Sound: 4/5 (only sound effects)
Can listen to your own music: Yes
Gameplay: 4.5/5
Learning curve: Steep, learn to fly is easy, landing is the touch part…
I didn’t think possible for the iPhone/iPod Touch, a Flight Simulator! X-Plane 9 is “just” that, and no more. So if you want to shoot something you shouldn’t buy this and invest your US$ 9.99 into something else.If you like Fligh Simulator or X-Plane on your Mac or PC you should get this now!

This is great game but there are some limitations:
- No other air traffic
- No cities (at least I haven’t found any)
- No radio communications etc.
- Only 1 runway
When you start the game the first time you find yourself sitting on the runway, some instructions would have been nice. So here a quick guide how to get you up in the air:
- Tap on Brake to loosen your brake
- Slide the throttle on the left side to the top.
- Try to keep the plane on the middle of the runway. you can steer the plane to the left and right by turning the iPhone/iPod Touch like a steering wheel.
- Once you reach about 130 knots tilt the iPhone/iPod Touch so that the top side moves towards you. Don’t tilt the iPhone/iPod Touch too much
- Tap on Gear to retract your gear.
You can access a menu and different views by tapping once on the middle of the screen.
Flying around is fun and it feels realistic and the controls work good and work as you would expect it. You can choose between 4 different air planes and also select weather, wind, time of the day, visibility.

Anrufen Online gaming coming to the iPhone
September 10th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
iPhone as a gaming platform is still young, but that’s not stopping some developers from dreaming big.

WiSTONE is currently developing Anrufen Online, a MMORPG, for the iPhone. Now this isn’t the first time a mobile developer has aspired to producing a mobile MMORPG, Kiki Technology made a similar announcement for their upcoming title, PanfobiA. Although many developers promise to deliver, most ambitious titles end up as vaporware.

WiSTONE’s Anrufen Online reminds me much of Diablo, with it’s isometric view, even one of the characters is named after blizzard in the above screenshot, hehe. The game centers around using summons for combat, very few details were given out about this game. If the game plays anything like Diablo’s point and click gameplay, then Anrufen Online will be right at home on the iPhone’s large touchscreen.

It’s also expected to be released on the Symbian OS. Hopefully they’ll allow both Symbian and iPhone owners to play together online.
No word as of when the iPhone version of Anrufen Online will be released.

The First iPhone Skateboarding Game
September 9th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
Illusion Labs, makers of the well-reviewed iPhone game Labyrinth, shot us an email tonight announcing their latest game, and wow does it look amazing.

TouchGrind is a skateboarding game like you’ve never seen. The video below is pretty self-explanatory, and really shows how you will use more than one touch at a time to control the skateboard.
In addition, the game will come with an online level editor that will be open to all, so that new courses can be created and shared.
See the video below, and prepare for a review real soon:

Fantasy Football on Your iPhone
September 5th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
ESPN, welcome to the mobile era
Have you been bummed that ESPN has a contract only with Verizon ?
I logged into my fantasy football teams today to find a link to get updates on my mobile device (inn my case an iPhone). I have guarded excitement since I complained that there was no such thing (at least that was easily findable) for fantasy baseball.
To get started, they asked me for my phone number and wireless carrier. I put that in and got a text message with a link (http://espn.mobi) that took me to http://m.espn.go.com/. I eventually found my way to the fantasy football section and all I needed to do was login. I’m assuming that they just wanted my phone number so they can spam with text messages as the season wears on. Yey! I imagine that you can just go directly to the fantasy football section, and login and you’ll be all set.
Everything is totally hunky dory. As it stands right now, it only allows you to see results. I haven’t found the ability to change your roster, or make any other sort of roster moves. That would be nice. It’s decent as is, but I’d love to be able to manage my team totally from my phone. So, it’s better than nothing and hopefully we’ll keep seeing improvements.
