Apple iPhone 3GS Features

June 12th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone

The awaited 3rd generation of iphone is finally here “Iphone 3G S”, and mind the word “S” it stands for “SPEED !!!” . Packed with more speed, apps, and more than 100 new cool features.

So here we go with the review.

1. Speed

As already suggested the alphabet “S” in the name is for speed, and according to Apple this one is about 2 times faster than the previous generations.
With a new inbuilt processor, of 600MHz (better than the previous generations of 412MHz) this machine works like a charm. Iphone 3G S also reveals 256MB of RAM inside twice of first and second generation iphones.
The launching messages is 2.1 faster, load the NY Times in Safari: 2.9 times faster. It also consumes less, which has an impact on the improved battery life.

2. Camera

When I used the previous generations of iphone, one the biggest flaw that i wanted fix was the camera, with a price tag of 200$ (30,000Rs in India) you can surely expect a better camera than a 2 megapixel. So Apple keeping its user’s demand in mind added one more new hardware. They increased the resolution to 3 mgpxl and it can even take videos. This is what they added.

  • 3 Megapixels sensor.
  • New camera, with auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance.
  • You can also tap to focus, changing white balance in the process. That is really neat, if you ask me.
  • Special macro and low light modes.
  • The camera also supports photo and video geotagging.
  • Any application can access all the camera functions now.
  • It supports video, 30 frames per second VGA with auto focus, auto white balance, and auto exposure.
  • You can trim the video shot just using your finger, then share it via MMS, email, MobileMe and YouTube.

3. Connectivity

Other good thing about “S” is that it supports faster 7.2 Mbps 3G. Although This fast speeds are not available in India, but it’s always good to have an added feature ;-) . “S” has everything you would possible need to connect to the outer world.
  • Three band UMTS/HSDPA.
  • Four band GSM/EDGE.
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g.
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • 3G 7.2 Mbps.

4. Graphics and design

  • The new iPhone 3GS includes new 3D graphics support in hardware. This means faster and more complicated 3D games.
  • Same 3.5-inch widescreen multitouch display, but this time it has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.
  • Same design as before, including the glossy finish of the back (so much for all the rumors about the matte back.)
  • Same size as the old iPhone 3G: 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches.
  • The weight increases a bit: One ounce to 4.8 ounces (135 grams vs 133 grams).
  • Greener materials: Arsenic-free glass, BDF-free, Mercury-free LCD.

5. Other New Features

  • It has a magnetometer, which works with a Compass application, third parties, and it is integrated into the new Google maps app, showing your orientation with a small semitransparent cone.
  • Voice control. You can now talk with your iPhone, Enterprise-style. You can instruct it to play similar songs to the one you are playing, or call people. All you have to do is ask.
  • Nike + support built in.
  • Supports accessibility features, like zooming on text, inverting video, and voice over when you touch whatever text is on screen.

6. Battery

One of the new features of the iphone is increased battery life.

  • Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
  • Charging via USB to computer system or power adapter
  • Talk time:

Up to 12 hours on 2G

Up to 5 hours on 3G

Some Leaked Pictures of the new iPhone

June 8th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone

We knew all along what the new Palm phone, the Pre, will look like but we have no idea if Apple is going to modify the current iPhone design.

That’s why leaked pictures of the new device keep appearing all over the Internet:

Like every other leaked picture these are blurred enough with not enough details for drawing any conclusions. What seems to be obvious though is that the iPhone comes with a front-facing camera which will make video chat possible.

We’ll know more certain facts a bit later today.

Apple WWDC 2009 Keynote Finally here

June 8th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone

Just want to give everybody a heads up on Apple’s WWDC Keynote ready to be launched today (Monday, June 8th) with new iPhone models, etc. For those who don’t know every year Apple hosts The WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) showcasing new products and newest updates to the Apple lineup.

Rumors about the release of the new iphone:

  • The new iPhone will have a higher resolution rear facing camera with video capture support. The current iPhone has a 2 megapixel still camera, and my HTC Touch HD has a 5 mega pixel camera with video. The Touch HD can take video and upload it directly to YouTube. The current iPhone cannot. I expect Apple will not want to have another year with an uncompetitive camera on their phone.
  • The new iPhone will have a front facing camera. Video telephony (over 3G) and Video calling over IP (iChat, Skype, MSN) does need a front facing camera that many competitors have had for years. The Touch HD, for instance, has a front facing camera.
  • The new iPhone will have a magnetometer. The next and final logical step to location-aware devices is to add a digital compass. The iPhone and the Touch HD both already have GPS and accelerometers but neither have a compass. I think we’re going to see the introduction of a magnetometer to allow some really powerful third party applications (for instance you could point your iPhone at the sky and your phone could tell you what star you’re pointing it at).
  • The new iPhone will be more powerful. The recently announced Palm Pre uses the same chipset family as the iPhone but as a newer device it has a more recent revision which is about twice as powerful. It’s fairly obvious that the latest iPhone would use the latest generation technology.
  • The new iPhone will have longer battery life. As above, I expect a 10-20% increase on battery life.
  • The new iPhone will support HDSPA/HUSPA radio. Many of the current iPhone 3G competitors are already using mobile broadband services many times faster than the iPhone’s aging 3G technology. I expect that Apple will bring the iPhone family up to speed and finally start supporting “mobile broadband” HDSPA technology that is already widely available in Europe and rolling out across America.
  • Hopefully: the new iPhone will have a higher resolution display. I don’t expect that Apple will want to change the resolution of the iPhone as it may cause problems with the design and/or break some of the third party applications. However the Touch HD that I currently use has a 3.8 inch 800×480 Wide VGA screen that is frankly gorgeous and wipes the floor with the iPhone’s far smaller, less vibrant and and less detailed 3.5 inch 480×320 display.
  • There will be a cheaper “budget” iPhone. Considering the economic crisis, I expect Apple will announce a $99 (or $149?) iPhone with perhaps a small 2gb or 4gb storage capacity.

The WWDC 2009 will be held according to the following time zones in your part of the world:

07:00 AM – Hawaii
10:00 AM – Pacific
11:00 AM – Mountain
12:00 PM – Central
01:00 PM – Eastern
06:00 PM – London
07:00 PM – Paris
02:00 AM – Tokyo (June 9)
