Access your files on your home computer using your iPhone
January 11th, 2009 by iPhoneTechZone
Have you ever been out and about and you realize you have forgotten to email yourself that incredibly important file or you left your flash drive at home? Luckily, you can access your files at home from anywhere using your handy-dandy iPhone or iPod Touch over a wifi connection and some third party software.
The first thing you will have to do is to create an account with Dropbox, an online storage service. A free account with Dropbox gives you 2 GB of online storage, and you download your files from any computer with an internet connection.
Dropbox has both a web interface and an application that you install on your computer. The application installs a folder that allows you to sync files with Dropbox by simply dragging the target files into the Dropbox folder located in your home directory.
Next, you will need to download an ssh emulator for the iPhone/iPod Touch; I recommend TouchTerm (free). Once you download the app, create a new connection and enter you’re computers IP address and your username. Remote login should be enabled on your mac, but if it isn’t, you can enable it in the sharing panel of system preferences. Open the new connection, and, when you are prompted for your password, enter it.

Once you have ssh tunneled into your mac, copy the file you need using the “cp” command to the dropbox folder. The file will sync automatically and you will be able to access it from the Dropbox web interface.

If you do not wish to create an account with Dropbox or are just looking for a slightly harder but way more 1337 way to get your files from home, it is possible to attach an applescript to a folder that creates a new email in mail, attaches the contents of that folder to the email, and sends it to a specified address. Then, all you have to do is copy the files you need to that folder using the ssh emulator.

OpenSSH on the Go with TouchTerm v2.0 for the iPhone
August 25th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
As someone who travels often I am a true believer in moving as many functions as possible to my iPhone, although at times I think the results can be somewhat clunky and I quickly realize somethings just were not meant to run on a small mobile device there are times that apps just seem to fit. TouchTerm v2.0 is one of those, great SSH functionality on the go.

The new version is much more “mature” than the earlier version and as such it now has a nominal cost, completely justified.
From the developers:
TouchTerm 1.0 was first-to-market with a streamlined tool responding to the widespread demand for SSH on the iPhone; and now, we’ve taken all of the customer feedback and used it to create the first complete, polished, and mature SSH client on the App Store.
TouchTerm 2.0 includes:
Complete server, connection, and password management
RSA/DSA Key-based authentication, and public key distribution via e-mail
VT100 terminal emulation including boldface and reversed text and full special-key support (Control, Esc, Tab, backquote, and arrow keys). Run any command-line or screen-based console application. An unlimited terminal output buffer, which allows standard scrolling and zooming back through previous command output and easy visualization of large results or files
Rock-solid SSH implemenation based on OpenSSL and OpenSSH
Efficient screen rendering and buffering, which means: no lag in screen-based programs like top, vi, and emacs; view and scroll through large amounts of output data with ease; and, no crashing on output-intensive commands.
Several text entry options to maximize efficiency for command-line processing and file editing. Easily switch between entry and display modes to fit the needs of whatever tools you are using at the moment
Landscape mode support and configurable font size and color
A cross-session saved command history
A polished, intuitive, iPhone-standard interface

First official SSH Client for the iPhone & iPod touch
August 10th, 2008 by iPhoneTechZone
Now finally a ssh client is now available for the iPhone. It is called TouchTerm and costs $2.99. This was one of the other apps I loved having on my Treo that I was hoping to make it to the iPhone. This application allows you to gain remote access to your computer over Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G from your iPhone.

It does have a limitation right now that it does not have terminal emulation, so editing files with vi/emacs is out. However, the developer says it will be included in a update in the near future. There is also a pro version which will be discounted at first for users who buy this version and wish to upgrade.
I’ll have to see what the features are since this one will probably be just fine for me once the terminal emulation feature is added. I plan to download it when I get home from work and I’ll post some screenshots.
